Insights: Formative vs Summative Report

Compare the formative data entered into learning ladders with summative assessments imported into the system.

Formative data

Formative data is entered into the system regularly by teachers in Classes& Groups / Students. The Assessment Summary calculation generates automated judgements for formative data using the expectations set by the school's senior leaders.


Summative data

Summative data has it's own separate descriptors and expectations, set by an admin user in settings.

Creating a report

  • Select the academic year to view
  • Choose the target class, year group, teacher, ethnicity, attributes to include in the report
  • Select a start academic year and term
  • Select the time frame, academic year and term
  • Select the subject the summative data was imported into
  • Select the data source


You will see the subjects included in the report appear below:



Interpreting a report

Hovering over a coloured bar on the chart shows the percentage and descriptor from the Formative/Summative settings.



Click 'Show Students' for a list of students and judgements for the periods selected.


The right column is the 'Change' in judgement for both formative and summative assessments across the periods selected.



The average is provided for summative data, which is calculated based on the target group and time frame (academic year and term) chosen.


Scatter Graph


Choose to 'show' or 'hide scatter graph'. The scatter graph allows leaders to select a term to compare against the start point. The students' scores are shown against the regression line. 


Hovering over any score brings up the student information and scores.



Combined Summative Subject View

The combined summative subject view allows leaders to select a term and judgement to view the combined summative percentages.





Print the report


The Formative vs Summative report can be printed by clicking on the three vertical dots in the top right corner.


Two options are presented, 'Download Report', which creates a printable file and 'Help' which takes you to the support site.
