Enhanced User Permissions (Admin Function Only)

This article provides insights into Enhanced User Permissions and how an Admin user can request Enhanced User Permission rights.

Watch the video below, or read on to find out more about Enhanced User Permissions.

What are Enhanced User Permissions?

Learning Ladders has two user roles, Teacher and Administrators (Admins) - Read more about user roles to find out more about the default roles and permissions. Enhanced User Permissions allow the permissions for these default roles to be refined and edited by feature.

How Enhanced User Permissions work

We’ve broken down user permissions into 4 key areas of the site, Settings, Assessments, Reporting and Ladders at Home.

For each feature, we’ve created various permissions including:

  • View - Permission to view the feature only (no editing, creation, import or publishing)

  • Edit- Permission to view and edit the feature (no creating, import or publish rights)

  • Create- Permission to view, edit and create (no import or publish rights)

  • Import- Permission to view and import (where applicable)

  • Publish- Full permissions from view, edit, create, import and publish

The user with Enhanced user permission rights is able to edit the default settings for the users' role by feature, using the permissions above to block or award wider access.

User scenarios

  1. You’d like a Teacher user to support the Learning Ladders Lead to make curriculum changes for their subject.  Keep the default Teacher permissions but enable the ‘Edit’ for Curriculum.  This teacher is now able to edit but not import or publish subjects and ladders in the Creation Zone.

  2. You have a number of Admin users in the site but would like to restrict permissions for all other Admin users for Ladders at Home to ‘View’ only.  This prevents changes to settings for communicating to parents.

  3. Your school uses Student Reports and has a number of Admin users.  You only want one user to have permissions to ‘publish’ the report.  Change Admin user’s Student Reports settings to ‘Create’ which allows them to view, edit and create but not publish reports.

Why Enhanced User Permissions are useful

Refining permissions can help protect against unwanted changes to settings, curriculum or data across the site.  It can also enhance teacher user functionality to allow for better collaboration between subject leaders and the Learning Ladders Lead to make curriculum changes.

How to enable Enhanced User Permissions

To activate the Enhanced user permissions, you need to contact support@learningladders.info and tell us the name of the Admin user who will have Enhanced Permission editing rights.  This user will then have the ability to allocate user permission editing rights to other Admins if necessary.

Why do we need to contact support?
Changing user permissions around the site can block access to features.  In order to provide tips for changing permissions and the implication of doing so, we find it’s best to speak with each school individually before enabling this functionality.

FAQs

Why are the permissions greyed out in Settings?

When you go into Settings > Settings > Users and view an individual user, you will be able to see additional user permissions greyed out.  These permissions will remain greyed out until you’ve got in touch to say who the user with permission changing rights will be.  Only this user will see an editable list of permissions.

Can more than one user have Enhanced User Permission rights?

Once you've contacted us to request Enhanced User Permission rights for one user, this user can award the permission to any other Admin user themselves by going into Settings > Settings > Users > View User and enable 'Permissions' under Users & Permissions.

Can I amend user permissions in bulk for all users?

At this stage a user with Enhanced User Permission rights can amend individual users' permissions.  If you award the Enhanced User Permission rights to more than one user (temporarily) then they can assist you in editing permissions.

If you have any questions about Enhanced User Permissions you can contact the team at support@learningladders.info. It's always best to be mindful of the impact that changing a users' permissions can have so we're always happy to jump on a call and talk this through first.
