EYFS: Learning Ladders and Observations

Watch this Learning Ladders Workshop all about Observations in the EYFS Module

The Statutory Early Years Framework 2021 outlines the need for teachers to observe the children in their class/group in order to shape their teaching and learning:

2.1 In their interactions with children, practitioners should respond to their own day-to-day observations about children’s progress and observations that parents and carers share.

At the same time, the Framework has addressed the requirement for large volumes of evidence to be collected and the need for teachers to 'prove' their professional judgements with evidence.
2.2 Assessment should not entail prolonged breaks from interaction with children, nor require excessive paperwork.

Learning Ladders' Early Years Module gives teachers the choice to record as many or few observations as supports their teaching and learning.

Recording significant moments in an observation can be useful when making professional judgements about a student's progress and attainment. The ability to view observations whilst making professional judgements ensures that teachers can assess the breadth of contexts and independence a child demonstrates a particular area of development.
