Create default or custom student attributes

What are Student Attributes?

You can assign an attribute to an individual student, or apply the attribute in bulk to multiple students, to allow teachers to filter attainment and progress reports for monitoring purposes.

There are two types of Attributes, Default (already in the system), or Custom (created by your school).

Default Student Attributes

Default student attributes already exist in every Learning Ladder system:

Ethnicity= Read about the system's recognised Ethnicity codes here

PPPupil Premium (yes/no)

EAL= English as an Additional Language  (yes/no)

SEN= Special Educational Need

SEN Status Codes:

S = Statement
SA = School/Early Years Action
SA PLUS = School/Early Years Action+4
K = SEN Support
E = Educational Health and Care Plan
Q = School Action+ and Statutory Assessment
LAC=Looked After Children  (yes/no)

Custom Student Attributes

Schools can create their own custom student attributes for monitoring students.

Attributes are global across EYFS and KS1+ and are not specific to one year group. There are no limits to the number of 'custom' attributes you can create but be mindful of the effect of having a large number of custom attributes in report filter displays.

How to create a custom student attribute

A Custom Attribute must first be added in Custom Student Attribute Settings before you can assign the attribute to students using an import file.

  • Go to ‘Settings’, ‘Settings’
  • You will see a tab called ‘Custom Student Attributes’

  • Click on ‘Custom Student Attributes’
  • Click on Create New Attribute

  • To add an attribute, first enter the attribute name e.g. Homegrown

  1. Click on the drop down arrow to Select Type e.g. Free Text, Multiple Choice or Simple Yes/No Check

    Free Text

    You can set up any Free Text option for your attribute but be aware, the response must be exact when filtering reports, matching the imported free text attribute response imported against the student (this includes capitalisation, punctuation and spaces). For this reason we recommend the Multiple choice or simple Yes/No response.

  2. Multiple Choice

    Add options for your multiple choice attribute.  For example, the year a student joined the school as 'homegrown'.

    Simple Yes / No Check

  • When you have finished creating your new Custom Attribute, click on 'Save Changes'.

Common Custom Attribute Examples:

Homegrown- this is best created as a multiple choice with 'Homegrown' as the title and the options as the year joined e.g. 2022, 2023, 2024...
EAL- You may sync EAL Yes/No via an MIS integration but for broken down EAL attributes this is best created as a custom attribute, multiple choice with the different options e.g. New to English, Early Acquisition...
