Expectations
in Learning Ladders are the values the reporting calculation references
to assign students' judgments for Attainment and Progress. These can
be amended on a subject by subject basis and also, within subjects on a year by year basis.
This article will discuss how to edit expectations for a subject and the year groups a school wants to amend.
Where to edit Expectations
When you arrive on this page, there is a check box, which by default is checked and displays the default values for 'All Year Groups'
When this checkbox is filled, it indicates that this subject is using the default values, as shown in the below table for all year groups. Default in this context is specific to your school, so they will be the values in place previously, for all year groups.
There is no requirement for schools to edit the year groups within a subject, but some schools have identified specific years that work at a different pace to other year groups and want to amend the values for a term and year group.
If you only want to amend the default values for termly expectations, DO NOT uncheck the 'All Year Groups' box.
How to amend termly progress expectations
Think
about the coverage of objectives and assessment made in each term to
decide whether there is equal coverage, or likely to be a term with a
higher % of assessments recorded. For example, the climate, religious
practices or holidays may impact particular term or, the curriculum
delivery itself may impact the weighting.
Select ‘Edit Thresholds’
Amend your termly expectations by selecting ‘+’ and ‘-’
Click ‘Save’
Please note the termly expectations will be divided in two to achieve your half-termly progress expectations.
In order to print the half-termly thresholds please select ‘Print Thresholds’ on the right of the subject filter.
This is also a useful way to view the termly breakdown of expectations for Attainment and Progress.
Editing Termly Expectations by Year Group
As a school, you have decided that editing a subjects termly expectations for each year group is required to ensure as accurate as possible, reports that reflect their progress/attainment through an academic year. We have provided some guidance in terms of what to look at within this article:
Viewing a year groups average progress/attainment for a subject
To begin, you need to uncheck 'All Year Groups', which will then proivde the below display and options.
At first glance, you will not see any additional years to edit, these need to be added to the 'Edit List' using the above buttons/selectors.
- Using the Year Group selector, select the years you would like to edit, then click 'Add To Edit List'. These need to be added one at a time.
- This will add the respective year group to the below list, with the current expectation values
- When you first do this, the values will be the same as the Default (All Year Groups) values as no previous edits have been performed.
- Once you have added all the years you would like to edit, click 'Edit Thresholds' and the editing function will display with '+' and '-' action buttons next to each value.
- Each year group needs to total 100% and a handy indicator will also appear showing the current sum.
- If the sum is not 100%, you will not be able to save the edits.
- You are able to also edit the default values for all terms that you want to keep at the same values for using the same process.
- Once you have edited all values, click 'Save' and wait for the save confirmation message
- The process is now complete.
Only the years you have selected to appear in the edit list will be edited. No other year groups will be amended
To enable schools to view the individual year group values and how they present for each amended year group, we have updated the Print Thresholds function so it will now display the default values, for each half term and progress and attainment, as well as each year group which has been edited.
These can be viewed by clicking 'Print Thresholds' towards the top right of the page, indicated below.
What happens if I change the expectations mid way through the year?
If
expectations are amended, the calculation will apply the new
expectations and reflect the new automated judgements for Attainment and
Progress in Assessment Summary. This will also apply to prior year
judgements when looking back
What can we do if expectations are not producing automated judgements reflective of student's attainment and progress?
