How to Assess Year One Students against Reception Outcomes

How to Assess Year One Students against Reception Outcomes

Every year schools experience a number of students who transition from Reception to Year One still requiring opportunities to consolidate aspects of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

A few schools have asked us to supply the Non-Statutory Development Matters 2021 .csv file containing only Reception outcomes, so that teachers can monitor the student's progression against development in the 7 areas of learning.

The attached .csv contains the Reception outcomes for each area of learning.  This is designed for schools who have the EYFS module enabled.

Please take notice of the following guidance:

  1. The only year groups available in KS1+ primary module are Years 1-6 (or beyond if KS3 is enabled).  This is why the .csv lists the Reception outcomes as year 1.

  2. We advise that you do not add the EYFS outcomes for Reception into your current KS1+ subjects.  If the outcomes are added to your existing year 1 maths outcomes then these become assessment points for all year 1 students, affecting progress.  (If you flood fill those who have already achieved these R outcomes you'd then have inflated progress for Year 1 Maths in the Autumn 1).

  3. Instead, we advise that you use the Groups tool to create groups of students who require time to consolidate Reception outcomes.  Students can be from any class or year group.

  4. Import the .csv file attached as a separate subject (rename this whatever you would like).

  5. In Classes & Groups or Students, select the Group who are working to consolidate the Reception outcomes and select the new EYFS subject.  Only assess these students against the EYFS outcomes, in addition to assessing these students within their Year 1 cohort against Year 1 outcomes in the National Curriculum.

  6. This provides you with the student's attainment and progress against the Year 1 National Curriculum outcomes but also with separate reporting for their progress against the Reception outcomes they are working to consolidate.

  7. As these outcomes may be only tracked during the first term of Year 1 it may be more helpful to use Teacher Judgements to record attainment and progress judgements for this EYFS subject.  It may be that at the end of Autumn the student no longer requires additional time and assessment on these outcomes as they've been assessed as meeting the 'expected' development. (The automated judgements are generated using end of year outcomes, assuming the assessment takes place over 3 terms).

  8. You can share that the student is working on these additional outcomes via Ladders at Home if an Admin user selects this new subject to share.

  9. If the student no longer requires assessment for this subject, the teacher need not add any further assessments against this subject.
