EYFSP (Early Years Foundation Stage Profile) Support

The Early Years Foundation Stage Profile is a statutory summative assessment at the end of the Foundation Stage as part of the Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage 2021 requirements.

Read the latest guidance for the assessment in the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile 2022 handbook.

Each child’s level of development must be assessed against the 17 early learning goals. Practitioners must indicate whether children are meeting expected levels of development, or if they are not yet reaching expected levels (‘emerging’). This is the EYFS Profile.

Where to find the EYFSP tool

Click on 'EYFSP' on the green navigation menu. This will fold out to another 'Assessment' button to click through to the EYFSP tool.

Selecting classes/students

  • The default academic year is the current academic year.
  • Select a Class/Group

  • Subject default is EYFSP (no other subjects can be assessed within this tool)
  • Choose students either 'select all' for the whole class/group or click on the individual students to select.

View options

Click 'Full Screen' for an optimum, full screen view that shows more students and early learning goals on a page.

  • Student names will be listed on the left hand side of the page
  • GLD column will show N/A when no assessments have been added for a student
  • The areas of learning run along the top, with the corresponding early learning goals below.
  • If no judgements have been added for the student, the judgement for every early learning goal will be N/A.

How to record assessments

Admin note:
The judgements available in the EYFSP can be viewed by an admin user in Settings> Settings> Assessment Descriptors> EYFSP.  The descriptors, colours and codes for the EYFSP cannot be edited.

Teachers can view the judgements in EYFSP> Assessment by clicking on a judgement to show the options.

Judgements:
  • N/A - This judgement appears when no judgement has been recorded against the ELG.
  • No Assessment - If an exemption is granted for an individual child, select 'No Assessment' for each ELG.
  • Emerging
  • Expected
  • Exceeding (The exceeding judgement was removed in the updated Early Years Foundation Stage Profile Handbook 2022. This judgement remains available for international schools requiring this option.
  • UK schools can disregard the 'Exceeding' judgement as this does not form part of Local Authority reporting of data).

For extra support in making holistic judgements for students, each ELG has a ? next to it. Hover over the ? to read the ELG statement and consider the best fit judgement for the student.

Bulk Assessment

A 'bulk assessment' option has been created as a time saving tool for practitioners. To bulk fill all judgements within the ELG for all students, click on 'Bulk Assessment' and select the judgement.

This automatically populates judgements for all of the students for that ELG.

Assessments save automatically, there is no need to click 'Save'
To change the judgement for individual students, click on the arrow next to the judgement and select the judgement you'd like to replace it with.

GLD 'Good Level of Development'
"Children are defined as having reached a Good Level of Development (GLD) at the end of the EYFS if they have achieved at least the expected level for the ELGs in the prime areas of learning and the specific areas of mathematics and literacy. This helps teachers and parents to understand broadly what a child can do in relation to national expectations".Early Years Foundation Stage Profile Handbook 2022
  • GLD will show as N/A if a student has no assessments recorded against any of the ELGs.

  • GLD will show as 'No' if a student has not achieved at least the expected level for the ELGs in the prime areas and specific areas of mathematics and literacy.

  • GLD will show as 'Yes' if a student has achieved at least the expected level for the ELGs in the prime areas and specific areas of mathematics and literacy.

View Assessments and Observations

Practitioners can view the assessment judgements recorded throughout the Foundation Stage by clicking on 'Assessments'. This will open a new tab in the browser, with the class pre-selected.

Practitioners can review the significant moments in learning, recorded in observations by clicking on 'Observations'. This opens the observation manager in a new tab of the browser with the class pre-selected.

"Informed by a range of perspectives: assessment is predominantly based on the teacher’s professional judgement but should also take account of contributions from a range of perspectives, including the child, their parents and other relevant adults."

How to export assessments

Schools can export within the EYFSP> Assessment page by clicking on 'Export'.

This will download a .CSV file containing the studentsGLD, judgements for each ELG and on the far right, a GLD score.

The GLD score is calculated as per guidelines:

A (Not assessed)- 0
Emerging - 1
Expected - 2
Exceeding - 2 (Exceeding is not part of the GLD scoring as it is not part of the statutory assessment).

Export for submission to LA (UK only)

If you require an export for submission to the LA, an admin user is required to complete additional fields in Settings> Settings>EYFSP
Note: Non UK schools will not have this setting in the Settings tab.

  • Admin Users: Fill in the School's Reference Number and LA Reference Number and click 'Save'.
  • Click on 'Export' from this page to export either a .XML or .CSV file which includes the School Reference Number and LA Reference Number in the title.
  • As per guidelines for submitting EYFSP data to the LA, a new column will appear in the export file called DOB.
  • The school must populate this DOB file for each student before submitting the file to the LA. Learning Ladders do not store student's DOB.

Note: The software will allow the local authority to load into it's central management system a CSV file created from an early years foundation stage profile Excel spreadsheet with the export filename of either“EYFSP_xxxx_22.CSV” from schools or “EYFSP_yyyyyy_22.CSV” from early years’ settings. xxxx is the department for education school number and yyyyyy is the setting’s unique reference number (this is an early year’s setting example with a 6-digit unique reference number; a school CSV would have a 4-digit establishment number).

For schools unsure what their reference number is find this here-

If the school has a whole school subscription to the EYFS module and KS1+ module, year one teachers can look back on the EYFSP judgements for their year one class.

  • Click on EYFS in the top left corner of Learning Ladders
  • Click on EYFSP> Assessment
  • Select the academic year from the drop down selector
  • Select the class

Analyse EYFSP outcomes

Once practitioners have populated the EYFSP with judgements, analysis can be found in EYFSP> Analytics.

Read the guide, EYFSP Analytics to find out more.

Share EYFSP outcomes with parents

"Headteachers must ensure parents are provided with a written report of the child’s development against the ELGs and have the opportunity to discuss the EYFS profile. Early Years Foundation Stage Profile Handbook 2022

Schools are able to create a report template for providing a written report of the child's development against the ELGs. If Ladders at Home (our parent communication tool) is enabled, parents are able to discuss the EYFS profile via 2 way messaging, in any of 100 languages.

Read the Student Reports: EYFS guide to find out more.
