EYFS: Observation Map

EYFS: Observation Map

To read more about observations in the Early Years Module read the article, Learning Ladders and Observations.

Learning Ladders provides each school with the freedom to decide the amount of physical evidence they record, to inform their professional judgements.

2.2. When assessing whether an individual child is the expected level of development, practitioners should draw on their knowledge of the child and their own expert professional judgement and should not be required to prove this through collection of physical evidence.'

Many of our schools have expressed that they will still record some observations to support their professional judgements.

To support schools who choose to record and upload observations of the children's development, we have created an Observation Map.

Watch the video below to find out more:

Where can I navigate to the Observation Map?

The Observation Map has it's own button on the green navigation menu on the left hand side of the screen.
Click on 'Observation Map'. You can also navigate to the Observation Map from 'Observations'.

What is the best view of the Observation Map?

There are two ways to view the Observation Map. The first screen shows the selectors and has fewer Ladders displayed at a time. Clicking on 'Full Screen' opens a larger view, with more Ladders displayed.

Click 'Exit Full Screen' to return to the original view.

Selectors

Teachers can select a year group, class/group and rung year to view the map of observations.
Changing the rung year allows practitioners to consider the observations noted against specific objectives in their own bespoke curriculum across the child's academic year, and the prior and future years.

What do the numbers refer to?

The numbers in the Ladder row tells the practitioner how many observations have been uploaded and assigned to that Ladder.

Understanding the number of observations recorded against each Ladder can be useful in opening up conversations about learning environment, adult and child initiated sessions and future learning opportunities.

Against each rung in the school's curriculum, the column beneath the child's name indicates the number of times the rung has been selected in an observation.

If a rung has not yet been associated to an observation, the box appears red with a 0.

Why do the number of rungs not add up to the number of observations displaying at the Ladder level?

Typically, early years practice involves assigning more than one rung to an observation. For this reason, the number of rungs might not match the number of overall observations at the ladder level. You may have chosen 'Mathematics' as the ladder and assigned 4 rungs in an observation but it will only be counted as 1 observation for the ladder.

After a rung has been associated to an observation, the box appears green, with a number count of how many times this rung has been added.

Total Pupil Observations displays the total number of observations in the system for each pupil, across all Ladders.

Click on 'Expand' to see further information. 'Collapse' will fold away these additional rows.

Total Ladders and/or Rungs with 0 Observations tells the teacher, for each pupil, how many Ladders or Rungs have not been associated to any observation.

'Show Breakdown'

Clicking on 'Show Breakdown' opens out an additional column, telling the practitioner the Total number of observations recorded at the Ladder level and for each rung.

The 'Total' column shows the total number of observations recorded for each Ladder.

Total Class Observations is the sum of each Ladder total across the whole class.

Total Class Observations can provide useful insight for Phase Leaders in monitoring consistency of recording across multiple classes per year group.

Total Class Observations is the sum of every observation tagged against all ladders for the whole class.
Total Pupil Observations is showing the number of overall observations for every child in the class.
