EYFS: Using the Non-statutory Development Matters 2021 Framework

Learning Ladders give schools choices in how they create their curriculum. Read more about the choices here.

One option is to utilise the non-statutory EYFS Frameworks as a basis for your EYFS curriculum. The Early Years Framework 2021 outlines:

1.2 Development Matters, non-statutory curriculum guidance for the EYFS, is available to support providers in delivery of the EYFS learning and development requirements. As this document is non-statutory, Ofsted a inspectorates of independent schools will not have regard to it in carrying out inspections and it is up to providers to decide how they approach the curriculum. (DfE Early Years Framework 2021)

The non-statutory Development Matters 2020 statements will be pre-set in the system and can be found in the 'Creation Zone'.

Only admin users have access to the Creation Zone. Teacher users can only view Ladders which have been published and have only the 'Ladders' button on their green menu.
Step 1

Click on 'Ladders' on the green navigation bar.

Select 'Creation Zone'

From here you will see the subject, 'Development Matters 2020' and the Ladders for each Area of Learning and Characteristic of Effective Learning.

Step 2

Review, amend or make changes to the statements in the Creation Zone by following the instructions in this article and then click on 'Review and Publish'.

Please note: you will need to click on 'Review and Publish Changes' in the Creation Zone before the changes to ladders/rungs will be visible for teacher users.
